NSE brings in Augmont to wake up its gold receipts

Markets No. 31 28 September 2026 · 1 min read

Augmont's share price hit an upper circuit of 10% today.

NSE has brought in Augmont Gold Tech to promote Electronic Gold Receipts, or EGRs. These let you own physical gold in a vault through your demat account and trade it like a share.

The problem is that hardly anyone is trading them. EGRs started trading on NSE on 4 May. On 25 September, just ₹1.88 crore worth was traded, across 42 trades. That was only 1.2 kg of gold.

For comparison, 26 gold ETFs traded ₹568.67 crore that day, about 300 times more. Even 40 Sovereign Gold Bonds traded ₹16.86 crore.

NSE is already waiving transaction fees on EGR trades until 3 November to encourage trading. Augmont needs the volume too. Its revenue rose 30% to ₹18,946 crore in the June quarter, but profit fell 15% to ₹60.86 crore. That is just 32 paise of profit for every ₹100 of revenue.
